I TOLD YOU SO

Released: May 14, 2024

lyrics

I can hear her now
She said “I told you so”
Get her voice out of my head
Or walk this road alone

I can’t tell you how
But you’re right, I know
Nonetheless, I can’t defend
I don’t have long to go

Hold my breath and hold her
I don’t even know her
Every lie I told her
“Until the end and over”
Still defend the old her
Self-pretentious loner
Still he says he owns her

So, uh,
Scream until your lungs bleed
At least I know you loved me
And love until your lips bleed
With the lips that kissed me

Said, give the lips you gave me
The “screaming out his name” thing
But if it’s all just the same
I don’t know what to do, so

Getting nearer now
Not the end you showed me, though (where I'd show you close)
I’ll never see this place again
Along this lonely road (where I'd hold you close)

Time is running out
And now I’m coming home (where I'd hold you close)
Nevertheless though in the end
I know…

about

Instrumentally, it's an adaptation of WHEN I GET THERE.

“I told you so.” You hear that phrase with a certain tone when it’s spoken.

With this in mind, I TOLD YOU SO is a story of grief. Grief over the death of a relationship. Various lines throughout are representing specific stages of grief.

Additionally, the writer claims to hear her say “I told you so”, and in this instance, he is admitting that she was right.

The ending? The final verses? It’s death. It’s suicide. With nothing left to lose, the writer accepts the fact they’ll never see “this place again”.

And in the writer killing himself, he has one final retribution:

You never thought I would kill myself.

I told you so.
